Why Gravity Forms Supports WordPress Accessibility Day

This is Gravity Forms’ second year sponsoring WP Accessibility Day, and as always, they’re delighted to be involved. Accessibility is close to their hearts at Gravity Forms, and their commitment to accessibility has been long-standing. When asked to share more about this commitment, Travis Totz, Director of Brand and Marketing at RocketGenius (the company behind Gravity Forms) said,

We believe that everyone should be able to use the web and web forms, regardless of device or ability. We want everyone to be able to use our forms, and we want site owners to be able to comply with government laws on accessibility, regardless of which country they live in or where they visit a website from.

Not only is Gravity Forms focused on the continuous improvement of their plugin when it comes to accessibility features and functionality, but they’re also focused on improving awareness around accessibility in the WordPress community and educating their users on the importance of creating web forms that are accessible to all – and how to do so!

Gravity Forms Works Tirelessly to Make Sure Forms are Accessible

Due to their complex nature, forms can be a major barrier to web accessibility for many, not least for those with cognitive disabilities and visual impairments – poor technology and small screens, as well as other situational limitations or temporary disabilities, can all prevent users from accessing web forms.

In 2021, The Gravity Forms team released a major update to their plugin that centered around accessibility, providing their customers with the features and functionality they need to create accessible forms. To guide them on their accessibility journey, Gravity Forms worked closely with accessibility expert Rian Rietveld and the team at Level Level.

For us, accessibility fits perfectly with our ethos of “doing things right.” Security and backwards compatibility have always been long-term areas of commitment for Gravity Forms, so focusing on accessibility was a natural next step.

Level Level is well regarded as one of the top accessibility consulting firms in the WordPress ecosystem, so it made sense for us to reach out to them. And we quickly found Rian’s passion for accessibility inspiring, helping our team to embrace the challenge and go the extra mile – which is needed when creating an accessibility tool!

Since the release of Gravity Forms 2.5 in 2021, the community can now use the Gravity Forms form builder to create fully accessible forms that are Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA compliant, helping to ensure their websites are available to all!

WCAG 2.1 AA is the global standard for web accessibility and is accepted as the standard for regulation in many countries around the world. For example, WCAG 2.1 AA complies with

  • Section 508 (US),
  • The European Accessibility Act,
  • The Equality Act 2010 (UK).

For more details about the laws in your own country, please check the W3C website Web Accessibility Laws & Policies. And, for in-depth information on how to create accessible WCAG 2.1 AA compliant forms, check out Gravity Forms’ extensive Accessibility Guides.
